11 Content Marketing Myths

Myth 1: Content marketing is just another buzzword

This myth is the most common one surrounding content marketing. Some marketers are of the opinion that “content” and “marketing” cannot be used together! If you fall into this category, think again about what you do on a daily basis when it comes to your business.

Most of us spend our entire day working for our business in some way or the other – we create content for newsletters, blogs, website updates; we promote them online; we soothe customers via social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter, etc., all with an aim to market our company in some manner. All these activities constitute content marketing! Thus, content marketing is not merely a buzz word – it’s something that you do every day.

Myth 2: Content marketing is used mainly by e-commerce businesses and start-ups

Content marketing can be used by everyone – it doesn’t need to be restricted to small businesses only. Large organizations such as IBM, Fanta, Intel have already adopted this technique ( source )! If they can benefit from content marketing so can your business!

Myth 3: I don’t have enough budget for a blog/sales pages etc.

This is another myth floating around about content marketing. It’s true that content must come at a price – but not the monetary kind! As long as you are willing to put the effort in with regards to creating and publishing quality content consistently then all other aspects of content marketing including design, social media etc. are relatively easy to achieve.

Myth 4: Content marketing is expensive!

While this could be true in some cases, the high costs of content marketing are a myth ( source )! As a matter of fact, you will find that your ROI from content marketing will significantly outweigh your investment. Also don’t forget about all the free resources available online for small businesses – Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google Hangouts are just a few of them which provide valuable customer insights to use in your content marketing efforts on a daily basis.

Myth 5: It takes too much time

Content creation takes time but if you work consistently and put in the effort then it will get easier with practice . However, good content can be used over and over again in various mediums – social media, blog posts etc. Thus it will take up less time to create more!

Myth 6: I’m not a writer

No matter what your role is at your company, if you’re passionate about the industry which you work in and have anything valuable to say then you can definitely create relevant content for your audience 🙂 One of my favorite quotes says “Never tell me that there’s too many blogs online – show me one that *you* find useful”. Everyone has an opinion and some things worth sharing with the world. Just open a word document or note-taking app on your computer or mobile phone right now and start writing away….within minutes you will have created content 🙂

Myth 7: Content marketing is not for my business

Absolutely false ! Even if you’re a local plumber, there are customers looking to buy plumbing services from your kind of business – they just don’t know it yet. Content marketing is an effective way to connect with potential customers and tell them about the great services that you provide!

Myth 8: My company doesn’t have enough Authority

Even if your company hasn’t been around since the dawn of time, small businesses can benefit from content marketing ( source ) in several ways including creating better relationships with existing customers, spreading brand awareness etc. You could also use a third party source such as a blog article or press release in order to establish authority.

Myth 9: Content marketing is just for online businesses

Content marketing can be used by anyone and in several industries! For example, restaurants could use content marketing to promote their new menu items or introduce a new brand of drinks – events management companies could create videos about the latest industry trend etc. Even you as an individual could benefit from content creation in one form or another!

Myth 10: Our business/industry isn’t interesting Enough For

Some people complain that their business is not interesting enough for our prospects so they won’t read blog posts created by us.

If this is true then it’s because your prospect’s aren’t looking hard enough for information about your business/industry yet . Blogs which are ranked high on Google already have thousands of viewers per day and while Google isn’t perfect at ranking quality content, it’s definitely a good place to start from.

Myth 11: I don’t have anything valuable to contribute

Well if you’ve come this far then you obviously do! As long as you own a business or are passionate about your industry then there is something which can be written down into blog posts etc. – whether it is technical information or resources for customers etc. Just look around yourself and write about the things that interest you – no one else has your voice!
